A excêntrica banda Sopor Aeternus (nome em latim para “Sono Eterno” – ou seja, morte) foi fundada em 1989, na cidade de Frankfurt, Alemanha, por Anna-Varney e Holger, que se conheceram em uma casa noturna gótica. O complemento do nome da banda – Ensemble of Shadows (Conjunto de sombras) – é uma referência à influência dos mortos na composição das músicas, segundo Anna-Varney.
Entre 1989 e 1992, foram lançados os seus primeiros trabalhos, que se trataram de uma tríade de demos com letras intensas e profundas, mas cujo som era tecnicamente muito ruim (Es reiten die Toten so schnell, Rufus on my lips e Till time and times are done). Logo após o lançamento das demos, Holger deixa a banda.
Em 1995, a banda teve cinco músicas integradas nas coletâneas What Sweet Music They e Jekura – Deep the Eternal Forest (dentre elas, duas eram covers do Black Sabbath – “Paranoid” e “A National Acrobat”).
Pode-se dizer que o som do Sopor teve inspirações em bandas eletrogóticas da década de 1980. Anna-Varney, no entanto, soube dar às músicas um toque sombrio e sinistro que as demais daquela época não possuíam, caracterizando suas composições de forma singular.
